Bobbie had a sound sleep and when she woke, Hennessy was standing by her bed. She smiled thinking it was nice to find him there.
“Hey you, I brought breakfast.” He pointed to two western sandwiches and a couple cokes. “Breakfast of champions. So what makes you special McNally? What’s the one thing you do better than anybody? I mean you are a natural sailor but what’s your special talent?”
Bobbie slowly got up. ” I can play the guitar and sing pretty well.” She said as she pulled her guitar out from under the bed.
“Now this is what I’m talking about, play me something McNally.”
“I just woke up!” She drank some water on her nightstand and then started to eat her sandwich and drink the pop. After they finished breakfast, she picked up the instrument and sang a couple warm up songs.
Hennessy clapped. “You continue to amaze, McNally.”
“So I passed the test?” Bobbie smiled and gave an exaggerated bow and put her guitar away. “What’s your talent Hennessy?”
“You mean other than giving you multiple orgasms? I like to draw.”
“Ha ha so funny, drawing is cool. So I’ve been thinking about the blow job thing, how do you know how to give a blow job anyway?”
“Well I know how it should feel and trial and error could be fun but actually I have a book.”
“You have a book that explains how to give a blow job?”
“Yup, and my roommate is away, so why don’t we go see some of my drawings and get my book.”
Bobbie got dressed and they walked over to his cabin. They entered and saw saw he had a couple of pictures drawn and hanging up, over his desk. One of a campfire, one of a guy on a sailboat and one of her, standing on the shore and staring at the sunset. They were really Good.
He rooted around the desk drawer and pulled out two books. One was “How to Make Love to the Sensuous Woman” and one was “How to Make Love to the Sensuous Man”. “I borrowed these from parents.” He offered one to Bobbie.
“They let you borrow these? Your parents must be way cooler than mine.”
“Well, they don’t exactly know I have them. I plan to get them back to their library before they notice. What could they even say anyway. It’s not like I’m keeping dirty magazines under my bed.”
Bobbie poked him in the side. “Are you sure you don’t keep dirty magazines under your bed?”
“My dear McNally; you will never know. Let’s hit the books.”
Bobbie sighed. “I’ll look at blow job and you can look up, oh I don’t know, surprise me.” This whole scene was quite surreal but she wasn’t worried. She read her instructions and spent 25 minutes between Hennessy’s knees. The exercise was a success. At least the book told her what to expect. Then Hennessy spent about 20 minutes between her legs. She really did not expect what happened then.
“See, you have 2 or 3 orgasms and I get 1. It hardly seems fair does it. Anyway, do you want to hang out today? I’ll go to the dining hall, they’re serving pizza today and I can grab a couple and some pop and some junk food and be right back.”
“I’ll go get my guitar and my music.” Bobbie had a box of music cassettes. Albums, recorded by her father. His students made suggestions of what he and Bobbie might like. Several were her favourites and her dad and his brothers played some of the songs at parties.
She arrived and Hennessy was already there. She showed him her tapes and he put one in his boom box cassette player. “Now, this better be good!”
“It’s Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young “So Far” and the album cover is painted by Joni Mitchell.”
They ate pizza and decided to relax on the bed and listen to music. Bobbie was excited to talk about music and explained that Joni Mitchell wrote so may songs and Maryanne Faithful wrote songs for the rolling stones and Pete Townsend from The Who made this great album with Ronnie Lane who was from the Small Faces and Rod Stewart was in the Small faces too. And she went on and on.
Hennessy loved her passion. Any songs she talked about, that were missing from the selection of tapes, she demonstrated by playing a verse and chorus on the guitar.
“Do you like to read Bobbie?” They talked about their favourite authors. He mentioned Kurt Vonnegut.
“Slaughterhouse 5 is amazing. He cuts through the bullshit and tells it like it is. Honestly reading and music saved my life this summer.”
“I guess I have been reading a lot too.” Hennessy explained that he had no brothers or sisters and that his parents had split up the week after he graduated from high school in June.
They skipped supper and kissed a bit and Bobbie talked about her parents and her brother Jamie. He loved music too and they played together, sometimes but she hadn’t seen much of him since her parents were mad at her and she was staying with her Grandparents until School started.
“Why are they mad at you? Did you rob a bank or something.”
Bobbie thought for a minute. “I broke their trust but their punishment was over the top. We are both so hurt. I think we’ll come back from it eventually. I don’t really want to talk about that right now.”
“That’s OK but maybe that’s the hint of sadness I see every time I take your picture.”
“Really?”
They fell asleep. Bobbie woke up around 2AM. She shook Brose awake. “It’s after midnight curfew. The security guys will kill me If they find me here; we’ll both be expelled!”
Ambrose looked at her. “OK, let’s not panic but you have to walk right past the office to get back to your cabin.”
“Oh God, I’ll never make it past them.”
“Maybe they haven’t started rounds yet because of the weekend. Climb out my window and I’ll stash your guitar and tapes under my bed and you can get them tomorrow. Good Luck.” And he kissed her.
“Wait, give me a small towel.” She jumped out the window, put the towel around her neck and started to run in the direction towards her cabin. She pretended to be out of breath and wiping her brow, when she stopped at the security off. “Hi, I hope you had a nice weekend. I couldn’t sleep so I went for a run. Sorry, I know I broke curfew.”
“That’s OK this time Miss McNally but in the future you should check with us before you go for an outing after curfew.”
Bobbie sighed with relief and went back to her cabin. She thought about Hennessy while she went to sleep.
The rest of the week they were busy doing boat work, a Marine Emergencies Duty course and winning sailing races. Mr Champ assured them that if they wanted to work on any ship as a hand, they all could.
The last night of the camp, Bobbie went to Hennessy’s room and gave him back his book. He was sitting at his desk. He was wearing his best button down shirt, khaki pants and boat shoes. He pointed to his packed bags. “I guess it’s all over but the crying.”
She was wearing her best Jessica McClintok maxi dress and platform sandals and they held hands and walked over to the mess hall, where they had a special banquet and the head of the school gave a speech. After the banquet there was a talent show and a couple of guys played a sea shanty that was really good. There were skits and Hennessy had a slide show prepared. She was grateful she was only in a few pictures. Bobbie closed the show with a couple of songs.
After the show Bobbie found Hennessy. “Well Hennessy I guess this is really goodbye, I have an early flight to get back home and won’t see you in the morning.”
Hennessy shook her hand. “You were a great partner.” He pulled her in for a hug and said. “McNally, If I ever see you again I will never let you go.”
